A Woman's body undergoes many changes during the 40s. There are subtle changes which need to be addressed before they become a major problem. Here is a list of routine medical screening tests for women over the threshold of 40 years.
Pelvic Examination and Pap Smear: After reaching the age of 40, it is always advisable to go for a complete pelvic examination, Pap smear and Tests for HPV. Cervical cancer is a leading cause of death amongst most women in India. Recently, a cervical cancer vaccine has also been introduced.
Complete Breast Examination, Mammogram: Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths in India. As the risk of breast cancer increases with age, every ageing woman should get mammogram/ultrasonography done and follow it with recommended guidelines. The clinical examination of breasts by a qualified physician to detect early lump etc is mandatory to detect abnormalities. BRCA mutation testing for breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility is advisable, especially if there is any family history of cancers.
Bone Mineral Density Test: It may not be fair, but it's true. If you're a woman, you're automatically at greater risk for osteoporosis than men. This happens due to declining levels of hormone estrogen which plays a protective role on bones in women. Osteoporosis is a degenerative condition of the bones, where vital minerals like calcium trickle from the bones, making them weak and brittle. The International Osteoporosis Foundation estimates that osteoporosis affects about 200 million women worldwide. Women start with lower bone density than their male peers and they lose bone mass more quickly as they age, which leads to osteoporosis in some women. Between the ages of 20 and 80, the average white woman loses one-third of her hip bone density, compared to a bone density loss of only one-fourth in men.
Vitamin D, Serum calcium, Parathyroid and other hormone tests should also be done for adequate understanding of bone metabolism and body functions.
Thyroid Test: Weight gain, hair loss, brittle nails and exhaustion etc are few of the common complaints of women post 40 years of age. A common reason for this is an under active thyroid or Hypothyroidism. This gland secretes hormones T3, T4 and TSH, which is responsible for controlling the metabolism of the body. Any alterations can produce serious changes in the body. Women are more prone to this due to the major hormonal changes we experience during pregnancy, delivery, lactation, and menopause. Women should get this test done once in 3 years after the age of 40.
Diabetes, Obesity, and hypertension screening: A blood sugar test, Hb A1C and lipid profile should be done to diagnose diabetes, pre-diabetes and allied conditions.

Health Alert: Beware of adulterated Paneer, Khoya and milk this Holi!

Paneer, khoya and milk are generally adulterated with starch which is used to give a thick, rich texture to sweets.

Health Alert: Beware of adulterated Paneer, Khoya and milk this Holi!Photo:ANI
Holi means myriad of colours and a mouth-watering line-up of sumptuous delicacies. It is celebrated with much fanfare and enthusiasm in Northern India. And this festival is certainly incomplete without sweets. But, while Holi is a time for merriment, we should also be alert about what we eat. During Holi, a wide variety of sweets are nowadays available for satisfying our taste buds.
Delicacies like gujia, thandai, lavang latika, and khoya burfi are synonymous with Holi. Gujia is a cuisine of North India, and is a sweet dumpling made with suji or maida and stuffed with khoya.
Sometimes, kesar (saffron) is added to enhance the yellow color of the sweet. But since kesar is very expensive, kesar gujia will only be available from reliable outlets selling branded products, otherwise there is a high chance of falling prey to adulteration.
"While buying branded products, check the batch number, manufacture and expiry date, food license number, as well as ISI or AGMARK certifications on the packaging. Also, make sure that the packaging has not been tampered with," said Dr. Saurabh Arora, MD (Auriga research and Director at Arbro Pharmaceuticals) and Founder of Food Safety Helpline.
Paneer, khoya and milk are generally adulterated with starch which is used to give a thick, rich texture to sweets. To check for the presence of starch mixed with khoya, take a small sample and mix it with water and bring to the boil. Allow it to cool and add two drops of iodine in the solution. If the solution turns blue, then it has been adulterated with starch.
Thandai, a milk based summer drink is synonymous with Holi. An exotic mix of spices, nuts and full fat milk go into the making of this cooling summer drink, which is traditionally mixed with bhang during Holi. The popularity of this drink lies in its recipe, which includes a number of ingredients that can be subject to adulteration, particularly during Holi, when the demand increases.
Importantly, synthetic artificial colors and flavors are also used in such drinks, which may not be allowed under the food safety regulations due to their harmful effects. Therefore, it is advisable to buy the ingredients fresh from a reliable retailer and prepare this traditional drink at home.
Adulteration should be kept in mind by the consumers before they purchase food products, especially sweets during festivals like Holi. In order to reduce the cost of production and give a finer appearance without putting in extra capital, unscrupulous sweet merchants put in unhealthy add-ons to serve their purpose.
The larger public is not optimally aware about adulteration and the ways in which items of consumption are laced with harmful additives. In fact, most people are unaware that a law prohibiting adulteration actually exists. The Food Safety and Standards Act (2006) safeguards the consumer against misbranded food, sub-standard food and food containing extraneous matter by keeping provision of penalties.
If a food product is found unsafe, then the food business operator may be levied with a maximum fine of Rs. 10 lakhs along with an imprisonment which may extend even up to a life-term.
"It is also important for the consumers to see the hygiene standards of the sweet shop while buying sweets to check if cleanliness is being maintained and whether food handlers are following basic personal hygiene standards," concluded Arora.

New Delhi: On Holi occasion, people often make such mistakes that they have to suffer huge losses later. This time, on the occasion of Holi, if you do not make any mistake, we are going to tell you some tips. A little caution can make your Holi even memorable.

  • The market has been decorated with colors, where the demand for natural colors made from flowers has increased. In the name of purity, people are selling chemical-based colors in the market, which are harming the faces and eyes. There may be problems ranging from these adulterated colors to skin rashes. Experts recommend less use of available colors in the markets. Skin Specialist recommends avoiding completely with chemical-based colors on Holi.

  • Eye Specialist Dr Shivam says that Holi celebrates with pomp, but if problems with chemicals go into the eyes, saving the eyes can lead to considerable problems. If possible to avoid this, play Holi wearing glasses.

  • The skin specialist says that due to the combination of colors, the body of the person gets infections, which is upset for six months or even years. To avoid these infections, before putting Holi, add bitter oil or any lube made lotion or cream to the whole body, so that due to lubrication the color will not affect the body.

  • If there is still itching or pain in any color, then wash the color with clean water and apply cream. If after that there is a problem then consult a skin specialist.

These experts are on the claim. ABP News does not confirm this. Before you start any suggestion or start treatment, take the advice of your expert.
